Testimonials
“I had spent 3 weeks with TCMS completing a 7-day internship and teaching placement. In one word… WOW. Tobacco Caye is surrounded by an explosion of rich marine life and diversity, paired with amazing people on the island. A true treasure. My time here was nothing short of spectacular and was a perfect balance of work vs play. We assisted with study abroad groups, night snorkel tours, the Annual Lionfish Derby, coral bleach surveys, reef clean up initiatives and MORE. This experience allowed me to develop my skills as an environmental/experiential educator and learn more about reef ecology.
Not to mention that Zara and James went above and beyond as hosts; making our experience one never to forget. Their passion, knowledge, and dedication for ocean conservation & research is extremely admirable and inspiring! If you have the opportunity to visit, or study with TCMS…. don’t hesitate.”
“This study abroad opportunity was an experience that I will never forget! Everyone on the island was so nice and welcomed us in right off the bat. James and Zara helped lead amazing days of snorkelling that were well planned out with the help of Windward Lodge and many of the locals on the island. James was such a great person to have at the Marine Station and we learned so much from him during our stay here from in-class activities and short lectures to many hands-on learning experiences in the field with excellent guides to help us along the way.”
“Our time on Tobacco Caye was outstanding thanks to the knowledge and expertise provided by Zara and James at the Marine Station. We had students who had never snorkeled or even seen the ocean before but James and Zara made them comfortable and gave them a safe experience. All students, regardless of previous experience, learned an extraordinary amount about marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation. Lessons they will carry forever.”
“The program was well organized and balanced. There was a good variety of experiences and the people were great to work with. James and Zara were great. I would love to collaborate with the Tobacco Caye Research Station again in the future. Overall, a great trip.”
“James & Zara were fantastic with regards to setting up all of the logistical aspects of the trip. They were available to answer all of my questions before the trip, during the trip and after the trip. They made the students feel comfortable and at ease during our stay on Tobacco Caye. They also played a significant role in supporting the curriculum I was delivering during the field portion of my Marine Biology course.”
“Tobacco Caye Marine Station and their newer leadership has been an outstanding improvement! Their energy for science, student interactions, and sustainability/environmental improvements is inspirational for both my students and me. I am very impressed and will be back again! They really do a thoughtful job at working with my needs and wishes as a leader, but they also relate well to my undergrad college students, too, so my students feel they are welcome members of the community”
“The instructors at Tobacco Caye Marine Station did a terrific job of instructing students about marine resources and also demonstrating, through their management of the station, what responsible marine stewardship looks like. The activity of the Reef Clean with Tobacco Caye Marine Station drove home for our students the importance of stewardship and their personal connection to problems of global significance.”
